Why Are My Windows Foggy? Inside, Outside, or Between Panes

Condensation on the Inside Surface

Warm indoor air can hold water vapor. When that air reaches a cold window surface and cools below its dew point, water forms on the glass. This is common during cool weather when cooking, showering, drying clothes, using a humidifier, or keeping window coverings tightly closed reduces airflow at the window.

Interior condensation does not automatically mean the window seal failed. It can occur on functional windows when indoor humidity is high enough or the glass surface is cold enough.

Condensation on the Outside Surface

Exterior condensation forms when the outside glass surface is colder than humid outdoor air. It can appear in the morning and disappear as sunlight or air temperature changes. In some conditions, an energy-efficient window keeps interior heat from warming the outer pane, allowing moisture to form outside.

Clean the exterior surface to confirm the location. If the moisture clears normally and there are no stains, leaks, or performance problems, it usually does not require window replacement. Condensation Between Double- or Triple-Pane Glass

An insulated glass unit has two or more panes separated by a sealed space. Fog Is Not the Same as a Window Leak
